Near the ocean, the path crosses through coastal scrub. Follow the signs to Arch Rock, past a second junction with Coast Trail. Four miles along, the trail ends at a junction with Coast Trail. Near the end, it became more of a trail and less of a road.
The trail is mostly a hike on gravel/dirt roads. The locked gate added roughly 2.5 miles to this hike. Parked at the red gate and started our hike. Always check the weather forecast before heading into the park and consider changing plans if the weather conditions are too extreme. At the 3.2-mile mark, Bear Valley Trail narrows from road to footpath (from which bikes are banned), and heads for the coast in the shade of Douglas fir. I decided that I wanted to see Arch Rock today, so we took a nice long hike on an overcast summer day. Summer hikers should start this trail before 10 am and bring plenty of water. This trail has no shade and no cell service. The first part of the trail is mostly sandy, whereas the loop section is mostly rocky. The loop also has educational wayside signs along the trail describing the unique geology and characteristics in the area. 1-mile into the loop section and is a popular photography spot. 2-miles and leads hikers back to the straightaway trail to the parking lot. Its a 1.5 mile hike to these house-sized boulders along the Big Thompson. Hikers can take the loop in either direction, but hiking it counterclockwise is recommended because it is easier to spot the namesake arch from that direct. The loop is a short.
